A Guide to Impacts, Species Shifts, and Stewardship Options
As the climate changes, forests in the Northeast already face warmer winters, longer growing seasons, heavier rainfalls, drought, and shifting distributions of tree species that alter how forests grow, regenerate, and respond to disturbance. In this booklet, Dr. Alexandra Kosiba describes the ecological impacts of such changes and practical strategies for managing forests under increasingly uncertain conditions.
Dr. Kosiba is a forest ecologist, tree physiologist, and assistant professor of forestry at University of Vermont Extension. She writes the Forest Insights column for Northern Woodlands. She specializes in climate change impacts to trees and forests and ways that foresters and landowners can incorporate climate change considerations into their decision-making and planning.
This guide collects a four-part series published in 2024 issues of Northern Woodlands magazine covering forest management for resilience, the effects of heavy rain, tree species migration, and future forests. A new introduction, a glossary, and further resources for landowners supplement the articles.
Northern Woodlands also published a companion booklet, A Guide to Forest Carbon in the Northeast, collecting earlier articles by Dr. Kosiba. Both publications are available online, either for free download or in print, with a small fee to cover the cost of shipping.
