The 2026 Northern Woodlands Conference, From Page to Place, will take place the weekend of October 23–25, 2026, at the AMC Highland Center in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Inspired by the experience of reading Northern Woodlands magazine, this intimate gathering will bring together writers, scientists, educators, land stewards, and curious minds for a weekend of shared discovery in the woods. Through field walks, talks, workshops, and creative experiences, the conference will explore the many ways people engage with and care for northern forests, from ecology and stewardship to storytelling and art.

Whether you’re a longtime reader, a forest professional, or simply someone who loves the woods, this weekend is for you.

Venue

We will gather at the Highland Center, AMC’s premier White Mountain lodge in New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch. It’s modern and comfortable, with ample indoor and outdoor common areas, reliable Wi-Fi, and free parking. Trail access starts right at the door, and the Presidential Range is just up the road. The center sits off NH Route 302. On-site lodging is available in shared bunk rooms; visit the Highland Center website for directions and accessibility information.

We’re proud to be partnering with the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation organization to host this gathering.

Note: On-site lodging is shared and available in doubles or quads. Room assignments are made by stated gender preference or special request.

If you have mobility concerns, please select a bottom bunk when registering.

Registration

Tickets are very limited and available in the following options:

Full Weekend Pass with Sessions, Meals, & Lodging: Shared Bunkrooms (Doubles & Quads), $525 – $575
Full Weekend Pass with Sessions & Meals, no Lodging, $425
Full Weekend Pass with Sessions-only, no Meals or Lodging, $350

Meal passes include Friday dinner through Sunday lunch. To help everyone move comfortably through the dining hall, we’ll eat in staggered groups. Attendees with a Sessions-only pass are welcome to bring their own meals. We’ll be happy to suggest a few pleasant spots around the Highland Center to enjoy your lunch or dinner. If you’re joining a pre-conference field trip on Friday, please plan to pack your own lunch.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Cancellations received by October 9, 2026, will receive a full refund minus a $25 administrative fee. Cancellations received after that date are non-refundable, though exceptions may be made in extenuating circumstances.

Local Lodging

For those not staying on-site, a range of lodging options can be found in the surrounding area, including in the nearby town of Bretton Woods and the broader White Mountains region. We recommend securing accommodations soon, as the area is popular during fall foliage season.

With Gratitude for This Place

The AMC Highland Center sits in Crawford Notch, on N’dakinna, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Wabanaki peoples, including the Abenaki, whose connection to these mountains, forests, and waters spans thousands of years. We offer this acknowledgment with gratitude to the Wabanaki people, past and present.

Program

The conference program moves between large group plenary sessions and smaller breakout sessions covering a range of topics including field skills, natural history, writing, art, and forest stewardship. Breakout sessions and field trips are limited in size, and registrants will have the opportunity to select their preferences closer to the event. The schedule also includes dedicated time for informal connections, with coffee breaks and evening receptions throughout the weekend.
