White-tailed deer populations are high across much of the Northeast, so much that deer negatively impact forest health in many areas. In parts of northern Maine, however, wildlife managers struggle to maintain five to ten deer per square mile. Filmmaker Ben Silberfarb visits a Moosehead Lake area deer yard in the company of Scott McLellan from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and explores how state biologists monitor deer and work to maintain critical winter habitat.
