In addition to its normal prickles, this blackberry has an extra spiky growth. What is this?
Answer
This is a gall formed by the blackberry seed gall wasp (Diastrophus cuscutaeformis). Each gall contains a single wasp larva, which overwinters there before emerging in the spring.
