Whatever draws us into the forest—be it birdwatching or logging, hiking or hunting—all of us are unified by the sense of wonder we feel in the outdoors. The forests, fields, and streams of our region are full of mystery, and if you stop and look closely, you’ll see all sorts of oddities.

A turkey spur.
A male turkey is full of weird body parts; there are the the wart-like caruncles on his neck, the snood that hangs over his beak, and a wicked-looking spur on each leg. This spur was from a 22-pound Tom that was harvested on the first day of Vermont’s spring turkey season.
