Artist Statement
Born and raised outside of Burlington, Vermont, I’ve always been fascinated by the diversity of invertebrates and the alluring beauty of the ocean. During my university years, I rediscovered my love of drawing and obsession with jellyfish and comb jellies. Over the next couple of years, I would work on publishing manuscripts, study at The Marine Biological Laboratory, and access scientific manuscripts made several centuries ago. It was looking at these old manuscripts - many lacking any visuals - that I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to make an illustrated guide to jellyfish around the world (something that hasn't been done for over 100 years). To begin my journey, I applied and graduated from the science illustration program at California State University Monterey Bay. I’m currently working towards my Ph.D. in the Biology Department at the University of Maryland, where I am using my art to explore the systematics and diversity of deep-sea comb jellies.
