The Miniature World of Slime Molds

Slime molds are enigmatic organisms best observed up close, making them an ideal subject for macro photographer Brent Haglund. Along with protozoa and alga, slime molds are within the kingdom Protista, a diverse group of mostly single-celled organisms that do not fit into any of the other three kingdoms in the domain Eukarya (Animalia, Fungi, or Plantae). Most of the roughly 1,000 species currently known are myxomycetes.

Myxomycetes start as spores, which develop into single-celled, microscopic organisms. These mate and aggregate with other cells of their species, forming a larger single-celled organism with many nuclei, called a plasmodium. As a plasmodium, slime mold can creep along leaf litter or rotting logs, engulfing and digesting bacteria, fungus, and decaying organic matter as it moves. Once it has depleted available nutrients, it becomes stationary and produces fruiting bodies, which release spores, thus starting the next generation. “The fruiting bodies truly steal the show,” said Haglund, who stumbled upon his first slime mold in 2019 while raking leaves in his yard. It was in the genus Physarum, with powdery white sporangia and a thin brownish stalk. He was immediately captivated.

Haglund spends time searching for slime molds in summer and fall, especially after heavy rains that can trigger slime mold growth and reproduction. He mostly photographs them in the field, finding that they change quickly when moved and are easily damaged. To find slime molds, Haglund recommends checking logs at spongy stages of decay along hiking trails, but he cautions that slime molds can be elusive. “After the spores have dispersed, there may be little evidence left that a slime mold once flourished in that spot,” Haglund said. “Due to their ephemeral nature, witnessing them at their peak is a treasured experience for me.”

Wolfs milk
Lycogala epidendrum, or wolf’s milk, produces a cushionlike fruiting body, called an aethalia, containing a gelatinous liquid that dries out as it matures. When brushed against or hit by a falling raindrop or leaf, the slime mold releases spores into the air.
Chocolate tube slime mold
Stemonitis splendens, or chocolate tube slime mold, releases spores from the brown tubes of its fruiting bodies.
Pretzel slime mold
While some slime molds’ fruiting bodies are distinctly different from the plasmodial stage, for Hemitrichia serpula, or pretzel slime mold, they are quite similar. Their fruiting bodies are plasmodiocarps, branching structures that emerge directly from the golden netlike plasmodial form pictured here.
Carnival candy slime mold
Haglund photographed this Arcyria denudata, or carnival candy slime mold, just before it released its spores. The spores of this slime mold create a fluffy, cotton candy-like appearance.
Wasps nest slime mold
Metatrichia vesparium, or wasp’s nest slime mold, is Haglund’s favorite. “I have yet to encounter it in its early stage, when it is still black and shiny,” he said. This photo shows wasp’s nest slime mold right after it has released its spores.
Blue slime mold
Haglund found this slime mold in the Physarum genus on the side of the log, where it was surrounded by muted browns; the blue color immediately caught his eye.
Insect-egg slime mold
The unique shape of the fruiting bodies of Leocarpus fragilis gives it its common name: insect-egg slime mold. This cosmopolitan species exists on all continents other than Antarctica, and the bright yellow to orange fruiting bodies often fade to a duller brown within a day of appearing.

Haglund was photographing Hemitrichia – the bright yellow spots in the background – when he came into focus on this slime mold. “I was amazed at the sparkling golden basket,” he said of this Cribraria specimen. Depending on which taxonomist you ask, the genus contains 30 or more accepted species, all difficult to tell apart.
