“I watched this red-tailed hawk land in a giant oak with a freshly caught rabbit, and the next thing I knew a red-winged blackbird began mobbing it,” said Lee Toomey, who captured this tense moment this past May at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. The hawk remained unfazed throughout the continued dive-bombing and cries from the blackbird. “It always amazes me how much wildlife action there is in our urban environments,” Toomey said. “It got me wondering what motivated the blackbird’s reaction: Was there an attempt on its nest or an old score to settle?”
