Northern Woodlands reader Pat Liddle took this photograph on her property in Canaan, New York. The linear impressions in the snow on the left side of the photo had this experienced wildlife tracker (briefly) befuddled. What happened here?
Answer
An eastern cottontail rabbit stopped here for a meal. It nipped a short woody stem, and as the rabbit munched away, the stem made the marks in the snow.
