I took this photo in our woodlot in central Vermont. Can you tell me what’s wrong with this tree?

From the photograph alone, I’d say this sugar maple lacks roots and leaves. Yes, that’s silly but it raises an important disclaimer: my assessment of this tree is based only on seeing a photo of its trunk. I have as much to go on as readers do.
