With the invasive Emerald Ash Borer expanding its range in New England, ash trees are facing an existential threat. In central Maine, where the Wabanaki tribes have long practiced the art of Brown Ash basket making, a unique effort at preservation is underway. We are joined by researcher Suzanne Greenlaw, a Maliseet and PhD student at the University of Maine School of Forest Resources, and her husband, nationally recognized Passamaquoddy basketmaker Gabriel Frey, to discuss hope, autonomy, indigenous relationships with land, and the quest to preserve a species under siege.
