Richard Silliboy, vice chief of the Mi’kmaq Nation, uses splints of brown ash (also known as black ash) to weave a basket in his studio near Houlton, Maine. Silliboy participates in the Ash Protection Collaboration Across Wabanakik (APCAW), one of several Indigenous-led initiatives to protect ash trees imperiled by emerald ash borer. APCAW is helping to identify lingering ash, collect seeds, and build awareness to safeguard the tree, which has cultural significance in Indigenous cultures. Photographer Eric Aldrich is documenting these efforts for The Nature Conservancy. Click here to learn more.
