Mainly nocturnal and amazingly well camouflaged, eastern screech-owls can be very difficult to spot. Weighing a mere 4 to 8 ounces, these short, stocky owls often roost in tree cavities. Photographer Shaun Terhune considers this species the “holy grail” of owl seeking in northern New England, although screech-owls are more common farther south and west in their range. He spotted this one basking in the glow of an April sunset in eastern Massachusetts.
