Photographer Jim Block got this striking shot of an American bittern thanks to a bit of serendipity. “During a group hike on the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway Trail 6, I learned about some very tame beavers in a pond in the Langenau Forest in Wilmot, New Hampshire,” Block explains. “After the hike I went there to try to find them. No luck. But something moved near the shore of the pond. I crept closer and got this shot. Not what I came for, but I’ll take whatever nature gives me.”
