After the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 devastated forests throughout the region, fallen logs were salvaged and sometimes stored in ponds and other wetlands, where immersion in water has preserved the logs. During times of severe drought, low water levels may reveal remaining logs, including this one, containing a mark made during salvage processing, at Harvard Pond in Petersham, Massachusetts. Harvard Pond is part of Harvard Forest, a Harvard University center of research and education in forest ecology, where studies have included the Hurricane of 1938 and other forest disturbances.
