Please be familiar with the magazine before writing. Our audience consists of conservation-minded people with an interest in all aspects of the forests of the Northeast. We are not a trade magazine for the forest products industry or an advocacy magazine for preservationists.
Write to us with a story idea that fits our audience. We like to surprise our readers with stories they won't find anywhere else.
Or, submit a short piece for "Knots and Bolts" (200-600 words). We cover a wide range of short subjects in that section and it's the best bet for new writers breaking in.
Either way, send along some clips or other writing samples.
Please keep in mind that, as a quarterly, we operate on a different clock. We are planning the contents of each issue six months prior to the publication date. Try to be aware of the seasonal aspect of your material.
| Issue | Publication Date | Stories Contracted | Copy Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March 1 | November 1 | December 1 |
| Summer | June 1 | February 1 | March 1 |
| Autumn | September 1 | May 1 | June 1 |
| Winter | December 1 | August 1 | September 1 |
We would like to receive the story in the body of an email and labeled with the subject "Story submission to Northern Woodlands" or on a CD in Word.
Feature articles generally run from 1000 to 3000 words. When we assign you a story, we will discuss length.
| Book reviews (400-800 words) | $50 |
| A Place In Mind (~800 words) | $100 |
| Knots and Bolts (400-700 words) | $50 |
| Poems | $25 |
| Features | $.10 per word |
Please note that these prices are for clean copy that requires only minor editing. We don't mind working with unpublished writers who have a grasp of their material, and we enjoy helping subject matter experts make their prose more appropriate for a general audience. However, the more editorial work we have to do on your material, the less we will be able to pay for it.
Please let us know if you have photos available to illustrate the story.
If you would like to submit a poem, please be aware that we only have room for short poems - usually around 1/4 page. We only choose four poems per year, and are therefore very selective. We generally use poems that are relevant in theme and imagery for the season in which they appear. Please email for instructions on where to mail your poem submissions.
We look for cover photo images that are in a vertical format, and will not be interrupted by the 2.5 inches (of an almost 11-inch height) taken up at the top by our title. We also have a short list of features on the cover, so a non-essential square of the photo will be written over. Sometimes a masterful photo can be ruined by everything we stick on top of it to make our cover, so keep the layout in mind. Remember that our magazine is as much about the people who live and work in the forest as it is about the birds, animals, and plants in it.
As a quarterly, the magazine is published four times a year - at the beginning of each season. Try to be aware of the seasonal aspect of your material.
We would like to receive your cover photo submissions as either slides or digital photos. Digital photos can be emailed to , but please keep emails to less than 1 MB each. We can read JPEG, PDF, or TIFF files. If yours is chosen, we will request a higher-resolution image. You may also mail us a CD of your images,
