Conservation Organizations
- New England Forestry Foundation
Based in Littleton, Massachusetts, and dedicated to providing for the conservation and ecologically sound management of privately owned forestlands in New England, throughout the Americas and beyond.
- Appalachian Trail Conservancy
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a volunteer-based, private nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the 2,175-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a 250,000-acre greenway extending from Maine to Georgia. The ATC’s mission is to ensure that future generations will enjoy the clean air and water, scenic vistas, wildlife and opportunities for simple recreation and renewal along the entire Trail corridor.
- Audubon Society of New Hampshire
New Hampshire Audubon, a nonprofit statewide membership organization, is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and habitat throughout the state. Independent of the National Audubon Society, NHA has offered programs in wildlife conservation, land protection, environmental policy, and environmental education since 1914.
- Cross Vermont Trail Association
The purpose of the Cross Vermont Trail Association, Inc. is to assist municipalities, recreation groups, and landowners in the creation and management of a four-season, multi-use trail across the state of Vermont for public recreation, alternative transportation, and awareness of our natural and cultural heritage. The trail will run from Vermont’s western border on Lake Champlain to its eastern border in the Village of Wells River on the Connecticut River.
- Keeping Track
Keeping Track’s mission is to inspire community participation in the long-term stewardship of wildlife habitat. Keeping Track teaches adults and children to observe, interpret, record and monitor evidence of wildlife habitat in their communities, and we support the use of monitoring data by citizens in local and regional conservation planning. Keeping Track’s focus on wide ranging mammals provides a vital indictor of the ecological health of the landscape.
- Montshire Museum of Science
The Montshire Museum of Science is a hands-on museum located in Norwich, Vermont, offering dozens of exciting exhibits relating to the natural and physical sciences, ecology, and technology.
- Northeast Organic Farmers Association
NOFA Vermont is a non-profit association of farmers, gardeners, and consumers working to promote an economically viable and ecologically sound Vermont food system for the benefit of current and future generations.
- Northern Forest Center
Founded in 1997, the Center works through networks and partnerships to build a sustainable economy, revitalize local communities and conserve the landscape of the Northern Forest of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
- Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests
The Forest Society is dedicated to protecting the state’s most important landscapes while promoting the wise use of its renewable natural resources.
- Vermont Reptile & Amphibian Atlas
The Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas Project collects and disseminates data needed to make informed recommendations regarding the state status, state rank, and conservation of Vermont’s reptiles and amphibians. With the help of volunteers, collaborations with conservation organizations, and staff members, we are continuing to collect information and broaden our knowledge base regarding the natural history, distribution, and effective conservation of Vermont’s Reptiles and Amphibians.
- Audubon Vermont and the Green Mountain Audubon Center
Audubon Vermont is a nonprofit, statewide organization whose mission is to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitat by creating a culture of conservation through education, science, and advocacy. The Green Mountain Audubon Center, located in Huntington, works to fulfill the mission of Audubon Vermont by offering diverse educational opportunities for children, adults, and families; monitoring bird and other wildlife populations; and demonstrating bird-friendly land management practices.
- NorthWoods Stewardship Center
The NorthWoods Stewardship Center is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality scientific, educational and conservation service programs in northeastern Vermont. NorthWoods’ mission of fostering long-term stewardship of human and natural communities is achieved through the integration of its five program areas: land management, conservation science, education, outdoor recreation, and conservation service.
- Green Mountain Club
The mission of the Green Mountain Club is to make the Vermont Mountains play a larger part in the life of the people by protecting and maintaining the Long Trail System and fostering, through education, the stewardship of Vermont’s hiking trails and mountains.

A professional organization of forest stewards and affiliates who are passionate about sustaining and restoring the integrity of our forests while meeting the needs of the communities that rely on them. Consulting Foresters
- Association of Consulting Foresters of America, Inc.
The Association of Consulting Foresters of America, Inc., works to advance the practice of professional consulting forestry; to establish and maintain high ethical standards for its members; to improve the competency of and provide a forum for its members; and to promote and encourage stewardship of the forest resource.
- National Association of State Foresters
Through public-private partnerships, NASF seeks to discuss, develop, sponsor and promote programs and activities which will advance the practice of sustainable forestry, the conservation and protection of forest lands and associated resources and the establishment and protection of forests in the urban environment.
- National Network of Forest Practitioners
The National Network of Forest Practitioners is an alliance of rural people working on the ground to build a forest economy that is ecologically sound and socially just. We are a clearinghouse for information and technical assistance, and a place for people to meet, learn, and make their voices heard.
- Society of American Foresters
The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.

New England Forestry Consultants, Inc. is dedicated to assisting landowners, industry and the general public in the management, utilization and conservation of forest resources.
- Consulting Foresters Association of Vermont
Consulting Foresters assist private landowners in identifying and achieving goals for their woodlands such as managing for forest products, wildlife habitat, recreation, water resources, and aesthetics. CFAV member foresters adhere to educational, work experience, and continuing education standards that set them apart from other consulting foresters.

- Smallwood Utilization Network
The Smallwood Utilization Network (SUN) was created to support healthy forests by promoting projects that help make forest restoration and thining economically feasible. Their projects include producing the Small Log Conference, helping with technology transfer to developing woody biomass organizations, and building a communication network through the SUN newsletter, and websites. There is no charge for the emailed newsletter or for adding your news and events.
- TimberBuySell.com
TimberBuySell.com is a project of the Smallwood Utilization Network designed to make the forest stewardship supply chain more efficient by encouraging collaboration and information exchange on the web. Besides having a section for posting forest materials for sale or raw material supply needs, the site features timber and forestry news and events from the US, Canada and around the world. Most of the events and articles are posted or submitted by readers.
- Silvics Manual of North America
This two-volume set is a U.S. Forest Service publication documenting conifers in Volume 1 and hardwoods in Volume 2. Information on habitat, life history, and genetics is given for 15 genera, 63 species, and 20 varieties of conifers and for 58 genera, 128 species, and 6 varieties of hardwoods growing in forest lands of the United States. Both volumes are available in HTML and PDF format, and Volume 2 is still available for order in book format.

- New Hampshire Coverts
The New Hampshire Coverts Project trains volunteers to promote wildlife habitat conservation and forest stewardship.
- New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association
The NHTOA is a non-profit statewide coalition of landowners, forest industry professionals, government officials, and supporters who work together to promote better forest management, conserve our working forests, and insure a strong forest products industry.
- Vermont Coverts
Vermont Coverts was established to demonstrate that well-planned forest management could enhance wildlife habitat and provide timber benefits as well. The two can go hand in hand. The goal of Vermont Coverts is to help woodland owners become aware that sound forest management includes much more than timber, pulp, and firewood production.
- Vermont Woodlands Association
Vermont Woodlands Association is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to advocate for the management, sustainability, perpetuation, and enjoyment of forests through the practice of excellent forestry that employs highly integrated management practices that protect and enhance both the tangible and intangible values of forests, for this and future generations.
- Catskill Forest Association
The Catskill Forest Association is a non- profit organization dedicated to enhancing all aspects of the forest in New York’s Catskill region.
- Catskill Landowners Association
The Catskill Landowners Association, Inc. (CLA) is an association of landowners dedicated to the proposition that enlightened private stewardship has and will continue to provide a most effective method of preserving the aesthetic and environmental integrity of Catskill lands.
- New York Forest Owners Association
The mission of the New York Forest Owners Association (NYFOA) is to promote sustainable forestry practices and improved stewardship on privately owned woodlands in New York State. NYFOA is a not-for-profit group of landowners and others interested in the thoughtful management of private forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
- Tug Hill Resources Investment for Tomorrow
THRIFT exists to promote the sustainable use of Tug Hill’s many resources, to provide a forum for the people of the Tug Hill region to share their experiences and to discuss issues that concern them, and to present educational and recreational programs for members and the public.
