A Rocky Past

Almost anyone who has walked in Vermont’s woods must have paused more than once to puzzle over the stone walls that run like stitching through most of the state’s wooded land. Even in the dense forest, a mile from the nearest habitation, the stone walls speak of a tamed landscape: a farmer, his team of oxen, a stone boat, sheep and cropland.
