Photographer John Timmis captured this image on Wilson Pond in Greenville, Maine. “She would disappear underwater going after aquatic vegetation,” he remembered, “causing the flies to leave her body – but they would be circling around waiting for her to rise back up. Seeing all of those flies on and around the moose (and the leeches attached to her legs) gave me a new appreciation for the things animals have to endure in their daily quest for survival.”
