Sarah R. Bogdanovitch

Sally is an Associate Professor at Paul Smith’s College and a certified forester through the Society of American Foresters. She is an advisory board member for The Rubenstein School of Enironmental and Natural Resources, University of Vermont, and a natural resources consultant.

Tom Ciardelli

Hanover, New Hampshire.

Tom is the owner of Hanover Outdoors, a flyfishing, hiking, and outdoor gear and apparel store. Prior to his retirement as a biochemist, he served for several years as a research chemist at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in White River Junction, Vermont. He has also been on the faculty of Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Medical School. Early in his career, Tom worked as an assistant research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany. He wrote over 50 scientific papers including 35 peer-reviewed publications, and was principle investigator on three Merit Review Grants from the Veteran’s Administration and five RO1 Awards from the National Institutes of Health.

Tom is an avid outdoorsman. He is on the board of trustees at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, on the advisory board of The Upper Valley Land Trust, and has also served the Hanover Babe Ruth Baseball and the Hanover Hockey Association. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of New Hampshire.

Tom Colgan

Secretary/Treasurer - Lyme, New Hampshire.

Tom is President and CEO of Wagner Forest Management Ltd. Wagner manages over 2.6 million acres in the northeastern United States and Canada.  Tom has a B.S. and a Master of Forestry from Duke University. He has spent his entire career in the forestry business in Maine and New Hampshire.

Esther Cowles

Esther is the owner of NativeScapes Designs, a residential landscape firm focused on the use of native species and organic land care practices.  Prior to starting her own business, she was the executive director for NH Project Learning Tree for over 14 years.  Esther also worked on the regional staff for the Northern Forest Lands Council and was the planning director for the regional planning commission for northern NH.  She holds a Master’s in Education from Plymouth State College and a BA in Economics from UNH.  She is married with a ‘tweener daughter and enjoys horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, and walking in the woods.

Julia Emlen

President - Seekonk, Massachusetts.

Julia is the principal of Julia S. Emlen Associates, a firm specializing in nonprofit consulting. She has more than a dozen years’ experience in advancement and fundraising across the non-profit spectrum. She has consulted on resource development with non-profit organizations in secondary and higher education, land conservation, health care, and the arts. Julia is an adjunct faculty member at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., where she teaches a course on philanthropy and fundraising. She is the author of Intentional Stewardship: Bringing Your Donors to Their Highest Level of Philanthropy (CASE, 2007). Julia is a member of the Association of Donor Relations Professionals and the Association of Philanthropic Counsel.

Timothy Fritzinger

Essex, Massachusetts.

Timo is a Principal at FLAG Capital Management in the Real Assets Strategies division. He leads several areas including fund strategy development, portfolio management and construction, manager diligence and selection, fund marketing, and investor contact. Prior to FLAG Capital Management, he was senior research consultant for Cambridge Associates, LLC.

Timo’s forestry work includes serving as acquisitions analyst for Hancock Timber Resources Group, evaluating New Zealand timberlands for The Forestland Group in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and working in the Federal Affairs Office for the Trust for Public Land in Washington, D.C..

Timo serves on the board of the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society, the Manchester-Essex Conservation Trust, and is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and the CFA Institute. He earned his B.A. degree in history, with studies in the environment from Yale University, later obtaining a Master’s Degree in Forestry and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in finance, also from Yale University.

Sydney Lea

Newbury, Vermont.

Sydney teaches in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Dartmouth College. He is author of a novel, two naturalist nonfiction books, and nine collections of poetry, most recently, Ghost Pain. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2001. Lea co-chaired the leadership committee of the Downeast Lakes Forestry Project, which conserved over 300,000 acres in Washington County, Maine. Recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Fulbright Foundations, he lives in Newbury, Vermont.

Marcia McKeague

Vice President

Marcia McKeague is currently the vice president, Maine woodland operations of Acadian Timber as well as president, Katahdin Timberlands LLC & Katahdin Forest Management LLC. She is responsible for the overall operation of these businesses which own approximately 300,000 acres of timberland and 800 leased properties.

Marcia is a professional forester and has been involved in managing timberland for over 25 years in north central Maine.  She has both a Bachelors and a Masters of Science in Forestry and came to Maine from Michigan to work on managing the spruce budworm at the start of her career.  Marcia is married with two college-aged children and enjoys spending time in the woods hiking, canoeing and skiing with her family.

Peter M. Silberfarb

Peter M. Silberfarb, M.D.  is The Raymond Sobel Professor of Psychiatry, Emeritus; a Professor of Medicine, Emeritus; and Chairman Emeritus of The Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.  He is well known nationally through his tenure as President of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and President of the American Association of Chairmen of Departments of Psychiatry.  He also has served as a Director of the American Board of Family Practice, and on the Executive Councils of the American Psychosomatic Society , the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Scientific Council of the American Cancer Society. His research and publications are focused at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, especially on the emotional consequences of cancer and the effects of cancer treatment on cognition.  He is known internationally in these areas and has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and the Max Planck Research Institute. Peter and his wife, Anne, are retired and live in Norwich, Vermont.  Both have served on the Boards of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science(VINS) and the Vt.Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.  They have two married children.  Their 200 acre woodlot is located in Sharon, Vermont and is in current use.  They have selectively logged it and have utilized the WHIP program to build vernal pools, erradicate invassive species, release apple trees and establish patch cuts.

Henry Whittemore

Readfield, Maine.

Henry is director of timber investments and acquisitions for FourWinds Capital Management, a private equity firm whose mandate is to build a global portfolio of forest and forest-related assets. Prior to joining FWCM, Henry was northeast regional manager for Hancock Timber Resource Group, where he held management responsibilities for 685,000 acres in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. He has extensive experience in land acquisitions, conservation planning, forest management, forest certification, biofuels/renewable energy, and financial analysis. Henry is a Maine licensed forester, Society of American Foresters certified forester, and serves as past chair for the Maine chapter of the Society of American Foresters. Henry serves on the boards of the Forest Society of Maine and the Mainewatch Institute. Henry was an agro-forestry volunteer from 1978 to 1981 with the U.S. Peace Corps, where he served in the Kingdom of Tonga. He remains fluent in Tongan and conversant in French and German. He holds a B.A. from Williams College and a Masters of Forestry from Yale University.

Edward Wright

Hamburg, New York.

Ed is president & CEO of W. J. Cox Associates, Inc., an insurance and risk management firm specializing in the forest products industry. He currently serves as a director and immediate past president of the Empire State Forest Products Association, chairman of Merchants Mutual Insurance Company (Buffalo, New York), director of Forest Resources Association, a director of the Keystone Lumbermen’s Association, director of the Group Self Insurers Association of New York,  chairman of the Niagara Lutheran Health Foundation, secretary of New York Lumbermen’s Insurance Trust Fund, and chairman of Soren Eriksson’s Game of Logging.
